Close to 400,000 people are blind in the Philippines due to cataract. What makes this an even
greater tragedy is that most of these people are unnecessarily blind. Cataract blindness can be
easily and fully cured in a simple, twenty minute, out-patient operation. But thousands of people
remain blind, either because the surgery is not available in their places, or it is not
affordable.
Since 1992, we have been providing cataract surgeries to as many of these people as we can,
averaging now about two thousand surgeries per year. By making use of donated medicines and
volunteer doctors, we have been able to reduce our actual costs to about P300 (US $7.00) per
surgery. With so many thousands still waiting for surgery, we desperately need to expand our
outreach into the remote parts of the country.
