We have designed a simplified eye chart, (Mr. "E" chart), for parents to use in testing the vision of their young children.

Instructions are provided in English and Tagalog.

This chart is being distributed nationwide to parents of young children. Other materials are available on eye diseases by writing to Resources for the Blind.

What The General Public Should Know

Myth or Fact? People with weak eyes should avoid reading fine print?

False. There are many misconceptions that people with weak eyes, or older people who have trouble seeing, should not use their eyes too much for fear of wearing them out sooner. There is also a fear that looking at fine print may accelerate vision loss. Let's compare our eyes to a camera. The camera will not wear out sooner just because it is used to photograph intricate detail. The same is true of our eyes and we should not fear using them to the fullest.

Myth or Fact? Mother's milk or urine will help cure sore eyes?

False. This is one of the oldest myths and yet is still a common practice being done in the coutry's remote provinces. There is not even a slightest medical proof that this can help cure this eye problem. On the contrary this may even aggravate the sore eye infection.

Myth or Fact? Reading in dim light will hurt your eyes?

False. Using the eyes in dim light does no damage them. It was not too long ago that ll nighttime reading and sewing was done by candlelight or with gas or kerosene lamps. Everyone should use good lightning to make reading easier and to prevent eye strain or fatigue
