The most important part of blindness prevention, especially in children, is early detection and treatment.
To help in detection, we are conducting on going eye screening in rural public elementary schools. Our team,
accompanied by an optometrist, checks the visual acuity of each child.
Children with an error of refraction of worse than 20/40 are provided with free eyeglasses. Those with eye
diseases are given a thorough eye exam by an ophthalmologist and provided with the treatment needed to prevent
blindness. Almost 500,000 school children have been screened under this program in the last few years.
