Blindness in the PhilippinesProjects and ProgramsWays You Can Help

One of our yearly highlights is our annual summer camp for blind children at the Caliraya Re-Creation Center, in Laguna. Each year about 150 children travel to Manila to take part in this experience of a life-time.

From the first day of camp, the schedule is filled from morning to evening with games, contests, sports, singing, handicrafts, swimming, horseback riding, and many other activities that these children are usually excluded from. Time is set apart each day for devotions in order for the children to learn about God's love and care for each one of them.

One of the most valuable experiences for these children is to meet other blind children who have been able to develop normally and who are facing life with confidence and enthusiasm. This can be a turning point in the lives of these children, especially those coming from the more remote and isolated places. They often return home with a new determination to reach the potential that God has for them.

Winning at Chess, Winning in Life

Dimple Ravanera began attending our summer camp for blind children in 1995 at the age of 11. Since then she has attended six times and has won many awards and honors, including the Miss Camper award last year. More importantly, she has learned that God loves her and that she does not need to be ashamed of her blindness. Her favorite memory verse is "Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." This year she is enrolled at PWU, with a major in Psychology.
